SERIES: Satire
This is one of 100 cards featuring humorous cartoons and advertising the "Ariosa" brand of coffee that Arbuckles' issued in the late 1880s. All the illustrations were originally published in either Puck, Judge, or Texas Siftings, three of the more popular satirical periodicals of the day. Most typically aimed their derision at blacks, country "rubes", the Irish, or idle schemers. This particular card was based on an 1888 Texas Siftings cartoon drawn by Syd B. Griffin and features a smart-aleck kid about to testify in court.
The back shows the familiar "Four Points" text.
SIZE: 5" x 3"
DATE: Undated (but probably 1888 or 1889)
LITHOGRAPHER: Not identified
CONDITION: Good, I'd say. The front of this card is only lightly soiled, but the back shows multiple transparent stains, mostly in the lower portion. There's also a small rubber-stamped name, "WALTER", in purple. The edges and corners are just slightly worn and there's a mild crease across the upper left corner. (Please see scans.)
MULTIPLE ITEM SHIPPING DISCOUNT: I will ship up to 4 cards for the single base shipping charge shown. For purchases of more than 4 cards, the shipping charge will increase by just a small increment for every 4 additional cards.
