REVERSE TEXT: NORTH CAROLINA.

SIR WALTER RALEIGH was the first Englishman to land a colony of people in this country. He sent out an exploring party in 1584, which landed on that part of America now known as North Carolina. They stayed about six weeks, and, when they returned to England, they declared that the part of America they had seen was the paradise of the world.

In 1585 Raleigh sent out another colony to remain in America, which was left in charge of Ralph Lane (who afterwards was the first man to convey tobacco to England), but they became discouraged and returned. Raleigh tried again to found a colony with some people who settled on Roanoke Island, but when John White, the governor, returned from England, where he had gone for supplies, the colony had disappeared.

The first permanent settlement was made in 1623. The settlers came to North Carolina because it was a free country. and they kept it so; tyrannical governors were deposed and church-rates were refused. When the Secession War broke out, North Carolina remained true to the Union until President Lincoln called on her to furnish her quota of troops for the Federal army, when she promptly took sides with the South. The State had more men in the Southern army, and lost more than any other of the Southern States. Of late years she has made marvelous advances in population, improvements in farming methods and industries.
